The Beatrice Student Senate had a special meeting to discuss the upcoming visit by its accreditation institution.
Twenty students were available at this meeting to ask questions and find out about the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning from a special speaker.
The speaker for the special meeting was Glenn Pasho, a tri-chairperson of the accreditation focus group who is also dean of Construction, Electronics, and Communications and Information Technology at Southeast Community College.
His topic was to explain why the North Central Accreditation Board is coming to campus on Oct. 22, 23 and 24.
He handed out a booklet, “Overview of the 2012 Self-Study Report,” and a paper detailing the possible questions the accreditation team may ask.
Student Activities Coordinator Carrie Puhalla has extra copies for anyone interested in this process at her office in room K415.
The accreditation board is coming to verify the information that is provided in the self-study report.
“The accreditation board finds it really important to get students’ viewpoints as to how the college is performing its duties,” Mr. Pasho said. “The board wants to be positive that any information gathered in the report is the same as the information they will be gathering by interview.”
The Senate will be meeting with the team on Monday, Oct. 22, at 11:30 in room K334, which is just next to the mailroom. Lunch will be provided after for any students that meet at that time.
Students are being encouraged to respond to a survey on the HUB using Survey Monkey that asks four questions pertaining to the accreditation.
Individual surveys are submitted anonymously, but each person submitting a survey will also be entered in a prize drawing. The prizes include eight $100 tuition reduction prizes and a Dell printer as well as many more prizes.
There are going to be T-shirts provided to the Senate encouraging students to participate in the accreditation meetings. The students involved in the Senate are asked to wear their shirts on days that they have regular meetings (Mondays) before and during the week of the visit.
Posters are also going up on campus during the next week encouraging students to participate with the accreditation team.
All students are welcome to attend regularly scheduled meetings every Monday at 11 a.m. in room K504 with Puhalla moderating. Lunch is always provided free for anyone attending the meetings.
