The SCC Storm baseball team wrapped up an eight game road trip through Florida recently and came away with a 4-4 record.
On March 23, the team played Pasco Hernado Community College in a two-game series. The Storm took the first game 2-1.
“They had won 12 games in a row,” Co-Head Coach Dion Parks said. “We found a way to score a couple of runs in the end to beat a quality opponent. “
PHCC came back to win the second game 5-4. Southeast had a 4-1 lead before Pasco fired off three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 4-4.
Pasco would add another run in the eighth to grab the win.
“They did what good teams do,” Parks explained. “They took advantage and came back and got us at the end.”
SCC throttled Elgin Community College 11-2 in the first game on March 27 at Lake Myrtle, Fla.
The Storm erupted for five runs in the third inning and cruised the rest of the way.
Creighton Wilke and Jerad Patton each notched four RBI’s to pace the team.
Parks said the Southeast “hit and threw the ball well.”
The Storm lost the second game to Elgin 10-9.
“We had a 2-0 lead and it started to rain,” Parks explained. “And we kind of lost momentum.”
Parks said the team battled back and had a chance to win it in the end, but left the tying run on second base.
Elgin had averaged 40 wins over the past couple of years and has made it to the NJCAA World Series.
Southeast split two games with Madison College at Auburndale, Fla., on March 25 as part of the Central Florida Spring Trip.
The Storm lost the first game to Madison 4-3.
Parks said the team had a chance to win it at the end.
“We played clean baseball, (and) we only had one error.” Parks explained. “We grounded into a double play to end the ball game, but we were right there.”
SCC rebounded to beat Madison in the second game 4-3. The coach said the team played good defense and took advantage of opponent miscues.
Southeast capped off the road trip with a return match-up with Elgin CC on March 27 at Chain of Lakes, Fla.
The team dropped the first game to Elgin 3-2.
“They had a division II All American on the mound,” Parks explained. “Kit Lofgreen matched him pitch for pitch for seven innings, (but) we just couldn’t get it done.”
Lofgreen gave up four hits while striking out seven.
The Storm came back to overwhelm ECC 18-7 in the final game.
The coach said the team came out and hit the ball well.
“Our bats came alive; it was fun,” Parks concluded.
Southeast’s record stands at 11-15 on the season.
