The Southeast Community College Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams made their home debut with the 1st annual Rhiannon Memorial Classic held Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10.
SCC hosted Cloud County Community College, Concordia Junior Varsity, Doane Junior Varsity and Hesston College.
The Hesston women handed Doane JV a 76-62 loss in the first game, while the Cloud County men’s team had no problem dispatching Concordia JV in the second game.
The third game in day one of the Classic had the SCC lady Storm avenging an earlier season loss to Concordia Junior Varsity 80-61.
Lady Storm Head Coach Vicky Wooton said it was a “great defensive effort by the entire team.”
Destiny Whitehead led the Lady Storm with 22 points including 6 of 10 from behind the three-point line. Mesha Phillips had 22 points, and Makayla Gardner pulled down 13 rebounds.
The nightcap featured the SCC men and a very improved Hesston team.
Hesston handed the Storm their first loss of the season with an 89-81 win.
SCC head coach Joel Wooton said the Storm could not overcome poor shooting from the field and the free throw line while Hesston shot 58 percent from the field in the second half.
Delquan Thomas had a triple /double, scoring 33 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Hesston women and Concordia JV opened up the second day of the Classic, with Concordia upending Hesston 72-66. The Hesston men and Concordia JV followed with Hesston winning easily 87-58.
The Lady Storm made it 2-0 for the classic with a come-from-behind 61-49 win over Doane JV.
Coach Vicky Wooton said the Lady Storm stepped up their defense in the second half, and it was an “all around team effort.”
Wooton said the team made some adjustments at half time and turned the corner in the second half.
Mesha Phillips led the Storm with 19 points while MaKayla Gardner had a double/double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. SCC improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Classic was capped off with an intense match-up between the SCC men and Cloud County.
The Storm overcame an early 16-4 deficit beat an athletic Cloud County team 76-63.
Delquan Thomas led the way for SCC with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Trey Porter and Jered Gamble added 16 and 14 points respectively. SCC improved to 4-1 on the season.
