Southeast Community College will hold a variety of activities, most open to the public, during its celebration of International Education Week, Nov. 12-16.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education and is celebrated every year during the third week of November. International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate and promote international exchange and international travel.
“SCC supports the International Education Week Initiative and firmly believes that Global Education helps to prepare our students to be better informed world citizens and future leaders,” said Dr. William Waters, SCC’s global education coordinator
Following is a summary of events occurring at each of SCC’s three campus locations.
Beatrice Campus – 4771 W. Scott Road
Nov. 16: Kennedy Center Room 331, 11 a.m.-noon – International food tasting and country information on Moldova, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, countries of international students attending SCC Beatrice.
Nov. 16: Kennedy Center Room 334, 12:30-1:30 p.m. – International students will give presentations about their home countries.

Lincoln Campus – 8800 O St.
Nov. 13: Rooms 102-104, V Section, noon-2 p.m. – Viewing of the award-winning documentary “Crossing Borders,” which tells the story of four young American students and four young Moroccan students as they travel together through Morocco. SCC employees can receive one hour of diversity credit for viewing the film.
Nov. 13: Rooms 102-106, U Section, 1:30-3:30 p.m. – This event will showcase SCC’s current global education focus programs and upcoming global education-sponsored programs and trips.
Table 1 – Students In Free Enterprise and the Women’s Coffee Cooperative in Fort Jacques, Haiti. Students in the Leadership Practicum class are working to assist 15 Haitian women involved with the Fort Jacques Coffee Cooperative to improve the quality of the coffee and to assist them to become more efficient coffee producers.
Table 2 – The global education trip to Haiti and the Dominican Republic: The African Diaspora in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, June 13-22, 2013. This trip will explore the history, culture, religion, and art of the people of African descent in Haiti and the Dominican Republic from the time of European colonizers to present.
Table 3 – Ponca Tribe of Nebraska Summer Trip 2013 (Summer Quarter). Calls with two weekend field trips to Niobrara, Neb. This experience will take place in two parts. The first part will be Summer Quarter English class learning about Ponca culture, language and oral traditions. The second part of the class will be two weekend trips to Niobrara working with Ponca youth and attending the annual Ponca Powwow. “We are working directly with The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and the Department of Ponca Cultural Affairs,” Waters said.
Table 4 – Service Learning in Guatemala Café Red Summer 2014: In this project SCC students will be working with Café Red (Café Network), a self-sustaining coffee house/restaurant by helping in areas of graphic design, business and other entrepreneurship opportunities.
Table 5 – English as a Second Language program at SCC: The ESL program will highlight services it provides to SCC students and will provide information on the immigrant and refugee communities in Lincoln.
Table 6 – Future Global Education Trips: China 2014: The Global Education Committee is always looking for trips for our students to be involved with. Our first proposed trip is to China sometime during the 2014-2015 academic year.
Table 7 – Georgia: At the Crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Participants will learn about the people and the cultures of Georgia.
Nov. 13: Rooms 102, 104, 106, U Section, 6-8 p.m. – SCC’s Global Tailgate is an international meal cohosted by two SCC business classes, Leadership Practicum and International Marketing, and the Global Education Committee. This will be an evening of food, fellowship and fun. Food from Portugal, Columbia, Guatemala, China, Haiti and more will be featured. Also, a special performance by “Echopoetico,” comprised of the award-winning performance poet Dominique Garay and the multi-talented musician Oscar Rios Pohirieth. They will be sharing their majestic fusion of Andean music and inspirational spoken word poetry. SCC employees can receive one hour of diversity credit for attending the tailgate and musical performance.

Milford Campus – 600 State St.
Nov. 12: Dunlap Center, noon-12:30 p.m. – Speaker Melina Jamain. Jamain is a foreign exchange student from France attending Milford High School.
Nov. 13: Scavenger Hunt (open to SCC students, faculty and staff only) – Winning entries will be eligible for a prize drawing.
Nov. 14: Dunlap Center Cafeteria – The International Food of the Day is Gyros. Students on the International Education Team will be serving them. The public is welcome at a cost of approximately $5 per person.
Nov. 15: Dunlap Center, noon-12:30 p.m. – Speaker Gil Becerra. Becerra is a student from Mexico in SCC’s Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Technology program.
