It’s been held on different days and at different times of the year, but one thing about Southeast Community College’s Open House has remained the same for decades: It’s a showcase open to the general public.
SCC’s All-College Open House will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at its Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford campuses. Planning for Open House starts months in advance and involves hundreds of employees.
“It’s always a special day during our academic year,” said Dr. Jack Huck, SCC president. “In recent years the focus of the day has shifted a bit to make it more of an overall recruiting event. We still advertise and market the college in various ways, many traditional. But Open House is the one day that the College opens its doors to larger audiences and really showcases everything we have to offer.”
Prospective students and their families will have the opportunity to tour programs of interest, talk to faculty and students and see hands-on demonstrations, all intended to help them make an informed decision about college.
“Our programs do an excellent job demonstrating to students what it means to hold a degree from that program,” Huck said. “We have such a high placement/transfer rate, and that shows that we are a tremendous value for the investment.”
Representatives who attended a recent job fair on SCC’s Lincoln Campus said one of their biggest challenges is finding enough skilled workers to fill open positions. Prospective students who are eager to start working should look no further than SCC to gain skills for employment.
SCC’s All-College Open House also is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to register for scholarships and get more information on housing, student activities, intercollegiate athletics, and financial aid.
At Beatrice, ultrasound demonstrations will take place every hour on the hour at the Agriculture Center south of campus, and a Longest Drive contest will be held at the golf laboratory behind Ford Hall.
SCC Financial Aid staff will conduct presentations in G-1 on the Lincoln Campus at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and will help with the FAFSA, answer questions or look up student accounts in Room B-10 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., also on the Lincoln Campus.
At Milford, approximately 20 businesses will showcase their operations during Spotlight on Milford in the gymnasium inside the Welsh Center. Also, the popular Engine Build Competition will take place at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. The competition will pit two teams of Automotive Technology students against each other in a race to see who can assemble an engine and get it started in the shortest amount of time.
Each campus will hold drawings for free Dell computer equipment. Each campus will be giving away one Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and one Dell Inspiron Duo. The mini is worth about $299, and the Inspiron Duo is worth about $599.
