Former Southeast Community College student Judy Fletcher was just 51 years old when she died in May 2010. The impact she had on friends and fellow Human Services students was so great, they decided to hold a scholarship benefit in her honor.
SCC’s Educational Foundation is holding the 2nd Annual “Celebrate Judy” party at the Rococo Theatre on Nov. 4. A dinner and dance will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight. The Mac McCune & The Mac 5 Jazz Band, The Blues Orchestra, and Loose Rooster will entertain.
Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner is being catered by Venue Restaurant & Lounge. Tickets are $50 per person for the dinner and show or $25 for the show only. There will be a cash bar. Tickets may be purchased from Brian Hull, event coordinator, at 402-432-3171. Proceeds from the benefit will go toward the Judy Fletcher Scholarship Fund.
Dietze Music and KZUM radio are sponsoring the event.
Last year’s event raised $7,000. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student in SCC’s Human Services program.
Fletcher’s positive outlook on life and her constant infectious smile impacted everyone who knew her. She was studying to become a substance abuse counselor and had planned to transfer to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a bachelor’s degree. Her goal was to one day return to SCC as an instructor.
Fletcher had dedicated her life to helping others after beating her own addiction. She was a volunteer and later a paid part-time employee at St. Monica’s, a substance abuse program for women located in Lincoln.
