Eight students in Southeast Community College’s Fire Protection Technologyprogram volunteered to help prepare smoke alarms that were distributed Jan. 27.
The smoke alarms were installed free of charge in Lincoln neighborhoods identified with high fire incident rates, said Terry Spoor, program chair. The smoke alarm project is a joint effort between Safe Kids Lincoln-Lancaster County and Lincoln Fire & Rescue.

SCC’s students, including members of the Fire Protection Technology student organization Zeta Theta Tau, met at Lincoln Fire & Rescue Station 11 for about four hours on Friday. The work involved removing nearly 1,500 smoke alarms from packaging, placing instruction decals on each alarm, and bundling the alarms into bags that teams used to install alarms in apartments and houses.
The Fire Protection Technology students were led by Corlena Obert of Lincoln, who is currently enrolled in a special projects class, and Nick Jindra of Lincoln, representing Zeta Theta Tau.
