Ingrid Michaelson is known for her acoustic sound and catchy lyrics. But on her new album, “Human Again,” which was released on Jan. 24, she changes it up a bit.
On the album, Michaelson paired up with music producer David Kahne, who also produced music for Imogen Heap, and together, they combined imaginative instruments to create unique sounds.
On “Human Again,” Michaelson sounds a bit more pop mainstream than her usual acoustic and piano soft sounds like her previous albums “Girls and Boys” and “Be OK.”
Similar-sounding bands and artists for Michaelson are Sara Bareilles, Allison Weiss and Meiko.
Their not-exactly-pop mainstream sound has put them into an unknown genre of their own, especially for Michaelson, with her acoustic ukulele sounds.
Michaelson’s catchy lyrics still remain, though, as in the third track on her album, “Do It Now,” which talks about seizing the day and not letting opportunities pass by.
In her first track, “Fire,” the repetitive lyrics give the song it’s rhythm, making it yet another song to easily catch on to.
In some of her tracks, such as “I’m Through,” Ingrid Michaelson reminds everyone of what kind of artist she is with her incredibly unique voice, almost sounding a’capella, with gentle music playing along.
Also in “Keep Warm” we are reminded of the adoring and sweet lyrics of love that accompany Michaelson’s music.
With Michaelson’s take on contemporary pop music on her new album, it is hard to get through to the Ingrid Michaelson that is known for her “against the grain” raw sounds.
On “Human Again,” however, there is still the romantic lyric and catchy tune factor that makes it worth buying.
