Southeast Community college has decided to combine Business Administration with Human Services, and on January 1, 2011, started the Long Term Care Administration program for those wanting to get their Associate of Applied Science degree and work in an assisted living facility.
The Long Term Care Administration (LTCA) program has been off to a great start with approximately 30 registered students.
SCC is one of the first colleges to offer this type of course all online. By providing online classes, LTCA has already been able to reach out to students all over Nebraska.
Program Chair Theresa Parker says she hopes for the online program to stretch into other states and eventually go nationwide.
Many states require long-term care administrators to have a Bachelor’s degree, so one could start at SCC and then move on to a four-year college.
The LTCA program can be completed in about 7 months by taking 18 credit hours per quarter. Students must also complete 640 hours of Administrators in Training (AIT), and then take the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Board’s (NAB) exam.
The Certificate is a popular program that gives those that already have their A.A.S. in another subject, such as nursing, the opportunity to go on to a new career. LTCA online Certificate can be completed in two quarters (with 18 credit hours per quarter).
Future administrators should have strong leadership skills, be able to motivate people, be well organized, patient, and have a strong desire to serve others.
New graduates could start out in a position with pay around $50,000 a year and some administrators can earn up to $70,000 a year.
