The SCC Lady Storm capped off the first half of the season with a 65-51 win over the Midland College JVs on Dec. 14.

The team used a 1-3-1 zone at various points in the game to help stifle Midland into shooting under 30 percent from the field.

Sophomore Veshae Wilkinson hit an early three-pointer and scored the first five points to help power the team to a 21-13 first quarter lead.

Co-Head Coach Lynn Schlake said Wilkinson was “holding back” early in the season, but really came on and is taking a leadership role with the team.

“She is playing hard, and taking control out there, “Schlake said. “And we need that, because we have some younger girls out there. She is playing at a high level right now.”

Wilkinson finished with just nine points, but dominated the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds. She also used an assortment of nice passes along the perimeter to notch eight assists.

Midland started hitting some three-pointers in the fourth quarter to tighten the game up and pull within seven at 49-42. But Sophomore Grace Green’s trey put the stops on the run and increase SCC’s lead back to 10.

“(Green) was open, and hit the shot; she always has the green light to shoot … no pun intended,” Schlake joked. “That kind of took the steam out of them, and we cruised (to the win) after that.”

The coach said it is easy to overlook Junior Varsity teams such as Midland. But those teams have a lot to fight for too.

“The thing about the JV teams is they shoot threes, hit free throws, and play hard,” Schlake said. “They want to play on Varsity, and that’s always a challenge for us.”
