Lady Storm Lose to Labette in Four Sets

Matt Hagemeier, Sports Reporter

The Lady Storm lost their tenth match in a row following a four – set loss to Labette Community College.  The two teams were originally slated to be part of a Triangular with Doane JV, but a schedule error resulted in Doane being absent with just one match taking place at the Truman Center on Saturday.

In the first set it was tied 5-5, before Jadai Burns blocked an attack and put SCC up 6-5. Two more points by Southeast increased the lead to 8-5, and the Lady Storm would stay a couple steps ahead, pulling away late for a 25-19 win.

SCC continued the momentum into the 2nd set, as Teresa Frary set the tone early with a kill to open the set. Southeast registered another point to lead 2-0. It was nip and tuck for a while before Labette commited back – to – back hitting errors giving SCC an 11-9 lead. Stevie Tobin slammed down a kill, and and followed up with Labette hitting another attack out of bounds to give the Lady Storm a 13-9 lead. LCC was forced to take a timeout, and after that the fortunes changed for Southeast.

Labette made adjustments, and then came back to take the lead to pull away for a 25-21 win in the 2nd.

Southeast had a late 23-18 lead in set number 3, and appeared poised to win the match. But LCC fought the way back and took the set 26-24.

The 4th set featured a tight finish as well, but SCC came up short 26-24. The loss dropped their record to 1-10 on the season.

Stevie Tobin led the Lady Storm attack with 14 kills, while Teresa Frary added nine. Tobin also recorded 13 digs. Kaliegh Solis led the Cardinal attackers with 17 kills.
