The SCC women fought hard, but came up short on the road to nationally ranked Des Moines Area Community College 74-69, Saturday, Nov. 4, at Des Moines.

“We were very competitive,” Head Coach Lynn Schlake said.

Southeast jumped out to an early lead and led through much of the game, but the coach said the difference was at the free throw line. Des Moines hit 22 free throws; SCC hit just six. For the game, Southeast shot just 42 percent from the line.

Despite the loss, Schlake said that he found the game encouraging.

“We played hard, (and) some new freshman stepped up,” Schlake explained.

The coach added that the team was a little short-handed, not having sophomore Sebit Gatluak at the point guard position due to injury. SCC had to rely on Marcia Hawkins and Madison Hajek to man the point.

Freshman Emily Zvolanek and sophomore Erica Goracke led the Lady Storm with 16 points each.

Zvolenek hasd an excellent all-around game with six assists and five steals, and Hajek came off the bench to add 14 points.

SCC will have stiff challenge once again as they will take on second-ranked Johnson County Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Truman Center.

“They are really good, but we will play hard,” Schlake concluded.
