Local Workforce Development personnel are excited to announce that they have received funding from the Workforce Investment Act for the 2012-13 school year.
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) was enacted in the late 1990’s to provide a program of training opportunities to low-income adults, dislocated workers and youth aged eighteen to twenty-two that experience some barrier to employment.
The adult and dislocated portion of the program assists in on-the-job training with subsidized wages during training. It also assists with classroom training up to two years for either short- or long-term schooling with assistance in training costs and fees in the classroom.
The program also has supportive services for the recipients to assist with utility bills and minor car repairs if necessary.
The youth portion of the program assists youths with disability, youths as parents or offender youths that have completed their convictions and may experience barriers to getting employment.
The program does not follow Pell Grant rules that require parental financial reports in order to qualify. All applicants are assisted on their own merit. Aptitude and interest assessment tests are used to categorize the students’ class needs.
