LINCOLN- Chiropractic screenings were held at Southeast Community college on May 11th to help inform students of how to achieve a healthy spine.
Dr. Alex Kallio, of Comfort Chiropractic, visited Southeast Community College Lincoln Campus to conduct a Chiropractic Screening event. Students were able to have a short consultation with Dr. Kallio and with chiropractic cssistants who answered further questions about Chiropractic care.
The procedure included the doctor running a SEMG (surface electro-myography) scanner up and down the spine creating a digital image that showed areas that may be in distress.
According to Dr. Kallio “Distressed parts of the spine are indicated in red or pink. These colors tell the doctor whether there is a compressed disc in the spine or other problems that would require further x-rays and workup.”
He goes on to say “The machine shows electrical activity in the surface muscle, much like an EKG for the heart, it’s much like a window into the structure of the spine. The scan is primarily only for the spine, neck, middle back, and lower back/pelvis”
Chiropractors believe these scannings are very beneficial for people that aren’t sure about the health of their spine.
When asked what were the most common problems found Kallio said “Common problems that we will see at a screening like this include: headaches, neck and back pain, sciatica, disc problems such as bulging or herniation, and nerve problems that cause numbness or tingling just to name a few.”
Sarah Towne, a CA (Chiropractic Assistant) of Dr. Kallio said “I think these screenings are very important, not to mention a good idea. You may not think that something’s wrong and then you find out there is. In my opinion just because you’re not hurting doesn’t mean something isn’t going on.”
Towne went on to explain, “When I first became interested in Chiropractic I had this kind of screening done. I was having off and on upper back pain and the EMG scan showed that I had tension in my spine causing pain. Soon after the test I went in to see a chiropractor, after two or three adjustments my pain disappeared”
Dr. Kallio doesn’t only treat adults but treats children and even infants “It’s important for children even as young as infants to receive Chiropractic care. Chiropractic is safe and effective for everyone.”
Kallio concluded “Stress plays a great factor in our spinal health and college students are highly stressed.”
Dr. Kallio and his staff are hoping to conduct more of these screenings at SCC in the future.
