Southeast Community College students who are interested in singing will have the opportunity to participate in a student choir when the winter quarter begins on Jan. 7.
The All-Campus Choir, now in its third year, was formed by Dr. Kenneth Hoppman. The idea was created in July of 2009 and put into action the following summer.
Dr. Hoppman, who studied piano performance at the University of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, describes the All-Campus Choir as “an outreach to offer music courses to all students.”
“There are a lot of students in Lincoln who have a desire to sing,” Hoppman explains.
He also shares that the goal of the All-Campus Choir is to offer one more opportunity for students to participate in music.
Hoppman, who has been with the Beatrice campus for four years, collaborates with Jon Gruett, a choral director for Lincoln High School. Gruett will direct the All-Campus Choir while Hoppman plays piano.
The All-Campus Choir is always accepting new members, and any Southeast student is eligible to join.
No choral background is required. Students who are just beginning or learning how to sing, along with those students continuing their singing, are welcome.
All sections learn the same music once a week during one hour and 15 minute rehearsal. These sections will then meet for two hours and 30 minutes at Lincoln High School the third, sixth and ninth weeks of the quarter.
There will be one performance at the end of the quarter, but the group is sometimes invited to perform for other occasions.
Joining the choir is as simple as registering on WebAdvisor. There are two sections on the Lincoln Campus under MUSC1410-BE01. This class will benefit any student as an elective and is worth 1.5 credits.
Any student who would like more information about SCC Chorus is asked to contact Hoppmann at 402-228-8256 or [email protected].
