Storm Baseball sweeps Hesston

Southeast got out the brooms for a clean sweep of Hesston College in back-to-back doubleheaders played last weekend.

The Storm ten run-ruled the Larks 11-1 in the first game held Saturday, April, 27, at Christensen Field . SCC followed that up with a come-from-behind 13-6 win to cap off the first day.

Mitch Stickney hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win in game one. Dylan Yost also added a homer to go along with a double, and pitcher Colton Adams struck out five to get the win.

In the second game, SCC scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to overcome a 4-1 deficit and roll to a win. Robert Ramsey was 3-3 from the plate with four RBIs. Ryan Tangeman overcame a rough start to earn the win, and Brock Collins came in and closed the game for the save.

The team then had to turn around and travel to Hesston to play games 3 and 4 on Sunday.

In game three, Robert Ramsey broke open a tight 3-2 game in the top of the seventh with a three-run shot over the left field fence to make it 6-2. Hesston made things interesting with a two-run homer by Nick Mitchell against Michael Svevad on the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 6-5. Jake Shelby lined out to the shortstop and SCC was able to hold on for the win.

There was less suspense in the series finale, as Southeast maintained control throughout the game on their way to a 6-1 win. Dylan Yost homered, and Phillip Tomosulo added a triple to help the offense.

Head Coach Dion Parks says the sweep was just what his team needed after a disappointing 10-1 loss at D1 and third-ranked Iowa Western earlier in the week

“This weekend was how you respond to a loss,” Parks said. “I’m proud of our effort all weekend long.”

The coach said it was tough to play a doubleheader on a cold, gloomy day and then turn around head to Hesston first thing Sunday morning.

“It wasn’t easy,” Parks said. “But you do what you have to do. Challenges and handling challenges are a major part of this deal, and I thought our guys really showed a lot of character.”

Parks said the team defense played a big part in the sweep.

“I feel like we are playing better and better defensively,” Parks explained. “We aren’t afraid to fail. We are going after it each and every play, (and) we are a fun team to watch when we get after it.”

Parks said sophomore Anthony Stewart is one of the Storm’s better defenders, and he has a unique skill set patrolling centerfield.

“Anthony is the best guy at going and getting it we have ever had here,” Parks said. “He is great at covering gap to gap. Stew has done a great job out there for us for two years.”

The series win leaves Southeast with a 33-13 record. They have won 14 of their last 17 games. You can watch live and archived games on ihigh.com/sccstorm
