Whether you’ve been preparing your son or daughter for college for a while or just thinking about the possibility, there’s a lot to do before they graduate from high school.

That is why Park Middle School, Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln, Duncan Aviation, and the Malone Community Center are hosting a “College to Career Night at Park.” The event is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Park Middle School gymnasium at 855 S. Eighth St., Lincoln. Southeast Community College, including representatives from the Learn to Dream Scholarship, will be among the participants.

Middle school students should start to think about their future. Will they want to attend The Career Academy, scheduled to open Aug. 12, 2015, on SCC’s Lincoln Campus as part of their high school experience? What college will they attend? How do you pay for college? What career are they interested in?

Students and their parents will receive information on a variety of topics, including how going to college can change your life, college selection and campus visits, career exploration and assessment, academic preparation and requirements, the admission process and requirements, understanding the financial aid process, scholarships, and successful transitions.

Attendees will learn what to consider when selecting a college. Whether you are interested in a traditional four-year college, a community college, or a trade and vocational school, hear about your options and how to decide which is right for you. Steps involved in the college application process also will be covered.

Many people don’t think they can afford college. Attendees will learn about financial aid programs and the importance of filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Research indicates that 90 percent of the fastest-growing careers require additional education and training beyond high school. SCC and other schools will have information, and many local businesses will show participants what it is like to have a career with them. The evening will include a light dinner and raffle drawings every 30 minutes.
