Although it may be difficult to envision a lush, green garden right now, you know it’s coming.
And so are the insects.
Southeast Community College’s Continuing Education Division thinks this is the perfect time for gardeners to prepare themselves for the onslaught of insects that will no doubt invade their gardens.
Titled “Insects in Your Garden,” this three-course series will be taught by Gage County Horticulture Extension Educator Nicole Stoner. Each class costs $15, or they can be purchased in a bundle, “Insects 101,” for $39. “Household Insects” will be taught March 4, “Garden Insects” will be taught March 11, and “Tree & Shrub Insects” will be taught March 18.
Registration deadline is March 1.
Each class runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 334 of the Kennedy Center on SCC’s Beatrice Campus, 4771 W. Scott Road. For more information, call 402-437-2700 or send an email to: [email protected].
Stoner has been with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension for nearly two years. While in Gage County, she has presented programs in Beatrice and surrounding communities, including to senior centers, service organizations, schools, and 4-H clubs. Stoner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture and insect science and a Master of Science degree in horticulture, both from UNL.
In the class “Household Insects,” participants will learn about the different types of insects, how to identify them and how to control them should they enter your home and cause harm.
In the class “Garden Insects,” participants will learn about the different types of insects typically found in gardens and how to control them, prevent them or catch them early in the progression this spring and summer to reduce the amount of damage they may do to the garden crops.
In the class “Tree & Shrub Insects,” participants will learn about the different tree and shrub insects and how to control them before they do too much damage to harm the health and vigor of our trees and shrubs.
