The SCC Storm have raced off to a 6-0 start after a 89-77 win over Hesston College, Nov. 11, at the Truman Center.
Head Coach Joel Wooton said the team started off sluggish and had a little trouble with Hesston’s zone defense in the first half.
“I didn’t think we were very aggressive attacking the gaps,” Wooton explained. “In the second half, we did a much better job of throwing (the ball) in and then kicking it back out for dribble penetration and better shots.”
Southeast sharpshooter Tyrell Corlew struggled from beyond the arc going 1-7, but the lone three he did make sparked the team in the second half.
The Storm led 75-72 in a back and forth game with under three minutes remaining when Corlew’s trey put Southeast up 78-72.
“Corlew’s shot was a dagger for Hesston… and it energized the defense,” Wooton said.
Hesston misfired on the next possession, and Josh Roberts drove the length of the court for a layup that stretched the lead to 80-72.
Corlew added 14 points, despite the struggles from the three point line.
Wooton said Tyrell has improved his floor game.
“Last year, he was hesitant to put the ball on the deck and drive,” Wooton explained. “He would go into a shell if the shots were not falling.”
The coach said his team has all the pieces to be successful.
“We got some athletes up front, our guards are pretty fast, and we can surround the perimeter with good shooters….probably for the first time since I have been here,” Wooton concluded.
