Five members of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Business Administration recently met with faculty from Southeast Community College’s Business Administration program to discuss a variety of topics, including the transferability of courses.
Dr. Kathy Eitzmann, dean of SCC’s Business Division, said the meeting was a positive step toward strengthening the relationship between the two schools.
“We send many business students to UNL,” Eitzmann said. “It’s important for those students to experience a smooth transfer of credits. We felt that it was time for both parties to sit down and discuss current practices and how we will move forward.”
Principles of Accounting I, Principles of Accounting II, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Personal Finance all directly transfer to UNL from SCC.
Dr. Donde Plowman, dean of the CBA, said the college appreciates how prepared students are when they transfer to the university.
“Students who transfer to UNL from community colleges generally do well in business courses,” she said.
UNL faculty members at the meeting were Dr. Carlos Asarta, associate professor of practice in economics; Laura Miller, assistant professor of practice in economics; Debra Cosgrove, assistant professor of practice in accountancy; and Jean Riley-Schultz, assistant professor of practice in accountancy. Each shared their course syllabi and discussed how they approach teaching the undergraduate classes.
Dr. Dennis Headrick, SCC’s vice president for instruction, discussed the transfer of classes from SCC to UNL. He said it was important to reinforce the articulation agreement already in place between the two schools.
“We recognize the value and importance of transferring students to the university,” he said. “That is the whole reason the Nebraska community colleges established several business courses that would articulate directly into UNL and most other four-year colleges and universities in Nebraska. The data shows that students who attend a community college and then transfer to a senior institution have a high rate of completing and graduating. We are pleased to continue to build on and strengthen the relationships between the two institutions.”
In all, 17 courses in SCC’s Business Administration program currently transfer to UNL. However, five courses transfer directly into the College.
SCC Business Administration faculty from the Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford campuses attended the meeting. They are Nancy Krumland, Kim Day, Cheri Dragoo, Gary Benson, Kathy Reiter, Tracy Corr, Krystal Gabel, and Dr. Beth Deinert.
