On May 1, the SCC Transitions Lab celebrated its one-year anniversary, but what is the Transitions Lab?
Kristina Lawrence, who has been with the program from the start, explains their mission: “Our mission is to help prepare students for success in college-level coursework.”
The lab offers a special “brush-up” workshop and the opportunity to meet with a transition advisor.
The process begins with a meeting with a transition advisor to assess students’ needs and course placement.
Advisors also meet with student needing to take the following courses: MATH 0900;0950 and/or ENGL 0850; 0880; 0900; 0950; 0980.
The advisors work with the students to determine their appropriate learning path. Some possible choices may include taking a Quick Start “brush-up” class, which aims to boost COMPASS Test scores.
This is a $20 non-credit class in which students study a minimum of 10 hours at your convenience in the needed area.
Upon completion, students are encouraged to retake the COMPASS Test for free with the goal of achieving a higher score.
Among other possible options the Transition Lab Advisors may recommend are enrolling in an accelerated class which combines Math or English prerequisites into one and enrolling in basic education classes.
To sign up for the Transitions Lab, or for more information, students and potential students can visit the lab Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
It is located in the library (LRC) at SCC Lincoln Campus, 8800 O Street. The lab can also be contacted at 402-437-2660 or [email protected].
