Tickets to the 20th annual Martin Luther King “Freedom Breakfast” are on sale now through Jan. 9.
The event will take place from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Lincoln. Doors open at 7 a.m.
Tickets are $20 per person. Sponsorships also are available. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Persons interested should make checks payable to: MLK Freedom Breakfast, 128 Canfield Administration Building, Lincoln, NE 68588-0437. The deadline is Jan 9.
Proceeds from this community event support scholarships for students in Lincoln. Six $1,000 scholarships were awarded last year.

The event is being sponsored by Southeast Community College, Lincoln Public Schools and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The keynote speaker is The Honorable John M. Gerrard, United States District Judge with the U.S. District Court, District of Nebraska in Lincoln. A native of Schuyler, Gerrard holds a Juris Doctor from the McGeorge School of Law at the University of Pacific, a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Arizona, and a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
In 1995, Gerrard became the youngest appointee ever to the Nebraska Supreme Court when Gov. Ben Nelson appointed the 41-year-old. He left the court earlier this year when the U.S. Senate confirmed Gerrard’s nomination to the federal bench.
Prior to becoming a Supreme Court justice, Gerrard was in private practice in Norfolk, and he also served as city attorney for Battle Creek.
