Troy Bornemeier of Lincoln won a gold medal, Justin Lammers of Ravenna a silver and Kyle Friedel of Atkinson a bronze during the 49th annual National SkillsUSA Conference in Kansas City in late June.
Bornemeier, a 2008 Lincoln Northeast High School graduate, won the top prize in the Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technology category. He is a graduate of SCC’s Major Appliance Professional Technology program on the Milford Campus. Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technology contestants rotated from station to station diagnosing common service issues on refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, microwave ovens, and dishwashers. They also demonstrated their ability to braze by assembling a copper and steel tubing project per a schematic provided. Customer satisfaction and employability skills also were evaluated using interviews, job applications and various types of assessments. There also was a major appliance technology general knowledge learning exercise.
Lammers took the silver medal in Fire Fighting. He is a student in SCC’s Fire ProtectionTechnology program on the Lincoln Campus. The firefighting contest evaluated the contestant’s preparation for firefighting careers through hands-on skill demonstrations and both written and oral presentations. Areas tested included safety; breathing apparatus; fire streams; ladders, ropes, knots and hoses; fire control; ventilation; emergency medical care and rescue; and protecting fire cause evidence. Contestants were evaluated using standards established by the National Fire Protection Association.
Friedel took the bronze medal in the Motorcycle Service Technology category. He works at Dillon Bros. Harley-Davidson in Omaha. He is a graduate of SCC’s Motorcycle, ATV &Personal Watercraft Technology program. Contestants performed tasks representative of those encountered in a dealership’s service department. Technical skills included performing scheduled maintenance tasks; use of service, electrical diagnostic and parts manuals; electrical diagnostics; precision measurement; brake service; chassis/suspension service; fuel delivery system inspection and repair; transmission and drive systems; power train systems; on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Judges looked for clean and organized work habits; correct use of reference materials; the ability to follow directions; and good technical skills.
Cody Lindamood, a 2012 graduate of Farmersville High School in Texas and a student in the Welding Technology program on the Milford Campus, and Mike Selvage, a student in SCC’s Precision Machining and Automation Technology program, also competed for SCC.
Three SCC advisors accompanied the students to the conference. Ken Jefferson, program chair for the Automotive Technology and Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology programs, Lincoln Campus; Randy Koch, an instructor in the Precision Machining and Automation Technology program; and Matthew Donner, an instructor in the Welding Technology program, Milford Campus, attended.
