The final Winter Quarter meeting of the Southeast Community College Student Senate began at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Mar. 12 in the Lincoln Campus Student Center.
President Nate Smith opened the meeting with a few notes on the quarter. “All in all it’s been a very productive quarter for the Student Senate,” he noted.
Smith went on to note some of the decisions and topics of note that took place over the quarter. He reflected on the tuition rate decision made earlier, raising tuition minimally beginning summer of 2012. Other topics he commented included the concepts of the smoking tent and other health related events.
Dr. Barbara Tracy of SCC contacted the senate through Smith with regard to the Smart thinking services offered to SCC students. She stated that she would love to set up a Smart thinking workshop soon to enlighten students to the benefits of the service.
Those that have used the online mentoring service praise it, urging others to take part. “I think it’s a very useful tool for students,” senate member Ms. Tifani Scotter began, “and most of them don’t know it exists.”
SCC students can receive five free hours of Smart thinking tutoring per year. Those interested in learning more about the Smart thinking online mentoring service can contact Tracy at [email protected]
In prior meetings, complaints had noted from the student body that students who smoke have been using the bus stop to smoke while somewhat sheltered from the elements. Wellness Chair Ryan Krueger suggested that a second bus stop be erected, leaving one as smoking and another as non-smoking.
Smith reported that the idea was a “No go from the faulty.” He stated that when the circle drive is re-done at the SCC main entrance, plans are to put up another stop. When this happens, the new bus stop will be non-smoking.
The meeting concluded on a somber note, reporting that collections for two deceased students will occur. The late Justin Springer and Michelle Mueller passed on during the Winter quarter.
Springer, age 25, was killed by a drunk driver going down the wrong way down a street on Sunday, Feb. 26. Mueller, age 36, lost a long battle with cancer on Friday, Mar. 2. She is survived by her son, among other friends and family.
Collections for the families took place during Winter Quarter textbook buyback.
The Student Senate will recess for spring break and resume with their regularly scheduled meetings on Monday, Apr. 2. Visitors are welcome to attend.
