Storm men rebound with win over Central CC
January 28, 2016
After a heartbreaking – but encouraging – 88-85 loss to Division I McCook Community College on Saturday, Jan. 23, Head Coach Joel Wooton said the close loss could propel the team going forward.
“It was a great effort,” Wooton said. “We need that on a consistent basis. We get that, and we make noise at our level.”
The SCC men generated some “noise” as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a decisive 77-56 win over Central Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Central.
Southeast’s defense held the Raiders to just 27 percent shooting.
Snyder CeneCharles exploded for a double/double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 17 rebounds. The sophomore also went 12-15 at the foul line and dished out six assists to round out his game.
Wooton said he needed more production out of forward Daniel William.
Considered one of the “bigs” on the team, William prefers to drive through the lane versus having his back to the basket.
Even so, when William is in there with raw but improving Centers Kouth Pouth and Thompson Ogbe and steady sophomore Liam McCreae, it can create match-up problems for other teams.
William answered the call in the win over Central, getting 15 points on 60 percent shooting.
The season is winding down for the Storm, and its record is currently at 8-10.
Since Central is the only other Division II school in Nebraska, it ultimately boils down to besting Central to get the region championship and move on the district tournament.
The Storm will face Central again at home on Saturday, Feb. 20.
If the team wins or loses to CCC by a closer margin than they won in Central, they will host the Region championship on Feb. 28.
