The SCC Storm notched a big win over Division 1 powerhouse Barton Community College, 82-77, on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Salina, KS.
It was a tale of two halves. Barton dominated the first half, outscoring SCC 46-31.
The Cougars broke loose a tight game early on, going on a 12-0 run to power their way to the 15 point half-time lead.
Southeast had trouble containing Barton guard Tyler Corley, who hurt the Storm on the dribble drive to the basket.
Head Coach Joel Wooton said the Storm struggled with shooting and committed too many fouls in the first half.
The coach said he told the team to “remain calm, trust the system, and move the ball around.”
The Cougars stretched the lead to 17 points early in the second half before SCC started aggressively driving to the basket, picking up fouls and chipping away at the Barton lead.
Wooton also employed a new defensive wrinkle.
“We switched to our half court trap, and that really bothered Barton,” Wooton said
Southeast flipped the game in the second half, outscoring Barton 51-31. SCC won the battle at the free throw line, outshooting the Cougars 72 to 40 percent.
Josh Roberts led the Storm with 23 points, including 10-12 from the line. Tyrell Corlew added 17, including 4-9 from beyond the Arc.
Barton was led by Tyler Corley, who finished with 18 points.
The Storm’s record improves to 7-1. Southeast returns home Nov. 21 to take on Union College.
