At 3:30 PM on Monday, January 23rd, 2012, the Southeast Community College Student Senate reconvened for their second meeting of the quarter.
President Nate Smith began with attendance and a review of the previous minutes before opening the floor to Senate issues.
A review of the activities revealed that on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 the hypnotist event drew a crowd of one hundred and six guests. Sixty three of these were SCC students, with the remaining 43 being guests.
Upcoming events such as the pool tournament and poker event were discussed. The Kickball tournament which took place on the 24th of January drew concern because only two teams had signed up as of the 23rd. Details for upcoming events can be found on posters in the main foyer of SCC – Lincoln campus.
Ms. Heidi Spier, senate activities chair, presented results on the proposition of a “Smoking Tent,” a shelter that would be placed outside, away from the building where students could smoke without being exposed to the elements. “A lot of people had asked about it,” she spoke when approached. “Students wanted to provide money (for the tent).”
To this point, however, the smoking tent is “a no-go,” Spier commented. With the current state of affairs, “Everybody huddles up by the door.”
Spier stated that she had spoken to Lincoln Campus Director Jeanette Volker about the proposition. “They said ‘It’s going to be an eyesore,’” Spier commented.
Smoking appears to be on many people’s minds, as Ms. Jill Edstrom, Practical Nursing major and Student Senate member proposed that the number of places where smoking is allowed outside the Lincoln campus building be reduced. “People shouldn’t have to walk around people smoking,” she added.
Smith moved the meeting forward with an update that the friendship home would be the recipient of this quarter’s community service project. The senate then went on to remind its members that the Windows Live SCC email addresses will be used as contact between SCC and its students.
SCC student email can be accessed directly through the Hub or manually at http://explore.live.com/. A student’s automatically generated login is his or her webadvisor [email protected]. The senate reminded its members that all students are welcome to synchronize their live accounts to their preferred email server.
Meetings take place every Monday SCC is open in the Student Center from 3:30 to 4:30. Visitors are welcome to watch the proceedings. Visitors interested in representing their program in the senate must become verified by their departments, bearing a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average.
