The Academic Transfer program at SCC provides a varied and applicable range of studies that can be applied at many Nebraska schools. Advisor of the Academic Transfer Program Mary Bartels spoke on behalf of the program.
“We assist students in selecting classes, making sure they meet their goals,” she began. “Some need Gen-Ed requirements, some are deficient in reading, some started at a four year school…and have come back to SCC.”
She noted that academic transfer students can choose to transfer to four year institutions, such as the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. “They see SCC as a comfortable first step,” Bartels noted.
Other students are internal transfers – often to the medical programs. Bartels noted that a number of internal academic transfer students move to the associate’s degree nursing program.
Bartels commented that they have a number of resources available to students. “We have enormous amounts of assistance here,” she said, and “we have guides on classes that will transfer. We have a guide for each college at UNL.”
According to Bartels, UNL is, perhaps unsurprisingly, where the majority of academic transfer students attend upon graduation. “It works both ways,” she noted, stating that “we (SCC) are the biggest feeder school to UNL.”
Academic Transfer students are not limited to UNL or SCC, however. “We have agreements with Nebraska schools across the state…students have the knowledge that classes will transfer.”
Bartels encouraged students to “come talk to us early – not late. We have so much information and we are so willing to sit down with the student to assist,” she finished.
