A practical, hands-on class that will provide the skills necessary to be a successful beekeeper is being offered by Southeast Community College’s Continuing Education Division.
“Beekeeping for Beginners” is a 12-month class that begins Oct. 8 and runs through Sept. 9, 2014. The class meets just once per month, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. the second Tuesday, at SCC’s Continuing Education Center, 301 S. 68th St. Place, Lincoln. Cost is $150 per person. Charlie Simonds, a retired state of Nebraska bee inspector who brings years of experience to the class, and Hershel Staats are the instructors.
To register, contact Nancy Holman at 800-828-0072 ext. 2712, 402-437-2712 or at [email protected].
Success in beekeeping requires an intimate knowledge of the honeybee and management practices based on colony habits and the bees’ behavior. Whether a person is interested in beekeeping as a hobby or for added income, this class will provide all the information needed.
During lab classes, students will have the opportunity to establish and manage their own hive of bees through one production cycle. There will be added supply costs for the hive, as well as equipment, which will be discussed the first night of class.
