Students in Southeast Community College’s Child Development Center, Students In Free Enterprise and Lincoln Campus Student Senate teamed up to collect more than 3,000 pounds of food and more than $1,500 for the Food Bank of Lincoln last month.
Non-perishable items were collected through mid-December, and an anonymous donor once again matched $1 for every pound of food donated up to $1,500.
Kari Schell, director of SCC’s Child Development Center, said 3,061 pounds of food was donated and $1,574.99 was raised for the Food Bank of Lincoln. Participants were asked to bring five units of food to textbook buyback areas, just outside the SCC Bookstore, or at SCC’s Energy Square location in downtown Lincoln. Barrels also were located throughout the Lincoln Campus.
The SCC student organizations promoted the food drive to students, faculty and staff, all of whom were eligible to win prizes. Sarah Peschong, a third-quarter Respiratory Care student from Lincoln, won the scholarship for tuition and fees for nine credit hours. Dozens of Lincoln businesses donated items for the prize drawings.
