SCC Milford to turn 75
April 20, 2016
Come celebrate 75 years of education in Milford!
Southeast Community College’s Milford Campus will have a community celebration May 6 and 7 with activities for the whole family.
The campus is celebrating its rich history from inception in 1941 as the Nebraska State Trade School with only five programs, to present day as SCC with 25 programs of study and approximately 750 students. This campus is home to Nebraska’s first vocational technical college and the nation’s first residential vocational college.
The campus is located at 600 State St. in Milford.
“I want the public to see the great things we do behind the walls here,” said Ron Petsch, chair of the Building Construction Technology program and co-chair of the 75th Anniversary Celebration. Petsch has been teaching at SCC for 38 years. “I want people to realize SCC is part of the community and part of the state.”
The celebration kicks off May 6 with campus tours, including a chance to climb the 60-foot climbing tower, watch a drone demonstration and see a collection of cars from 1941 to today.
On May 7 there will be activities for children, including a tractor pull, monkey motion thrill ride, wildlife encounters, and a free photo booth. Adults can watch the Blackhawk military helicopter take off and land, take a ride on a Model T or find out what it’s like to control a power plant simulator.
Saturday evening activities include music from the Burnt Biskits Band, comedian and magician Gayle Becwar and a free barbecue.
“We’ve put together something spectacular,” said Nancy Jantze, assistant bookstore manager and co-chair of the anniversary celebration. “We have an awesome campus here, and we want everyone to know it.”
