The annual Southeast Community College Lincoln Campus Food Drive held toward the end of 2012 collected more than a ton of food and more than $2,500, all for the Food Bank of Lincoln.
The 18th annual Food Drive collected 2,654 pounds of food and $2,547.
Children and staff in SCC’s Early Childhood Education program perform various tasks in preparation for the drive. Children collect boxes and decorate them after staff wraps them with paper. They then distribute the boxes to offices throughout the Lincoln Campus. Each group is assigned drop-off sites to check throughout the drive. The donations are then brought back to the Child Development Center where the children sort them and place them in barrels that the Food Bank delivers to the Center. Barrels are set aside in the Center just for Center staff and families to fill to encourage participation from within.
“The College pulls together to make this a successful event,” said Melinda Brown, assistant coordinator of the Child Development Center. “Many programs and divisions have been involved over the years. Offices request collection boxes, some instructors give their students incentives to become involved, programs have offered challenges to other programs, and areas have collected donations at get-togethers.”
Students in Enactus, formerly known as Students In Free Enterprise, have assisted with the Food Drive for several years. The Lincoln Campus Bookstore became involved in 2011 by holding a raffle along with its book buy-back for which they have collected more than 100 items, including a $500 SCC tuition waiver.
“This made a tremendous difference in the amount of food collected,” Brown said.
The first SCC Lincoln Campus Food Drive in 1995 collected 400 pounds of food. Since the beginning more than 22,465 pounds of food and more than $13,000 has been donated to the Food Bank of Lincoln.
