Southeast Community College’s Art Department is sponsoring an exhibition of objects made from upcycled materials.

The exhibition, titled “Upcycling: An Exhibition of Objects Made From Upcycled Materials for Yourself, Your House and Your Home,” takes place April 5-19 at the Beatrice Public Library.

Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling has shown significant growth across the United States and globally, as it offers a cleaner, eco-friendlier environment by the removal and reuse of waste; low-cost or no-cost raw materials with which to work; and new creative resources for artists, designers, architects, and craftspeople.

Nancy Hagler-Vujovic, SCC art instructor, said the tradition of reusing found objects has long been a means of production in the arts out of preference as well as necessity. This exhibition shows a sampling of the possibilities in upcycling and features works created locally and abroad.

Gallery hours are 4-7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4-5:30 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 2-5 p.m. Sundays. The Beatrice Public Library is located at 100 N. 16^th St.
