Southeast Community College has been approved to offer its popular “Co-Parenting: Working Together for Your Children” class online.
The State Court Administrators office approved the basic level online course last month. The course is offered through SCC’s Continuing Education Division.
The course costs $40 per person and takes a minimum of three hours to complete. Participants will need a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, speaker/sound capability and a working knowledge of computers and Internet experience.
The course cannot be accessed using an iPad or Droid tablet, and it is recommended that Firefox or Chrome Internet browsers be used.
Registration for the class can only be completed online at www.southeast.edu/Continuing/CoParenting. Payment must be made by credit card only.
“The online course provides more flexibility for people going through divorce or separation,” said Nancy Holman, a director in SCC’s Continuing Education Division. “It saves parents travel time and expenses that go with that, and it is much more convenient for parents who may live out of state.”
The class has been developed to fit the needs of parents and children experiencing parental separation or divorce. The following topic areas meet the requirements of the Nebraska Parenting Act and are included in the course:
- Stages of adjustment for parents
- A family parenting plan
- Stages of adjustment and their implications for children
- Making the transition between parental homes
- Recognition and management of stress, and
- Communication skills regarding conflict resolution
Parents learn a variety of information, including how to answer their child’s questions and how to keep them from being in the middle of the conflict.
“This is a difficult time for everyone involved,” Holman said. “The goal of co-parenting is to have a cooperative parenting relationship while living separate lives.”
SCC also offers the class in a face-to-face format. It also is $40 per person and takes three hours to complete.
SCC is an approved Parenting Act Education provider by the Supreme Court Office of Dispute Resolution, on behalf of the state court administrator, to educate parties about the impact of pending court action on children.
