BEATRICE- Southeast Community College Storm Softball finished up their season with a record of 13-27. This spring, they played a total of 40 games and all of those games were double headers or tournaments.
Storm Softball plays in the Nebraska Community College Conference. They compete with the following community colleges; North Platte, McCook, and Central.
Storm Softball finished as Region IX Runner-Up. Taking place at this tournament, The Storm defeated North Platte Community College in a double header with a final score of 12-0 and 8-1.
They were defeated by Central Community college 11-8, and in the championship game, 5-3.
The Storm’s main pitchers this season were Brianna Weichel and Marley Christian. Weichel finished the season with 77 strike outs and a 3.45 ERA. She was named to the All-Region IX team and the All Tournament Region IX team. Christian finished with 68 strike outs and a 4.33 ERA.
Home runs were led with 5 a piece by Lisa Vanderhoof and Jina Hamm. Hamm was also named to the All Tournament Region IX team.
SCC Storm hit 21 homeruns as a team this season, which set a new team record at Southeast Community College.
Leading hitter this season was Jamie Peterson, with a 368 AVE., 421 OBP, and a 35 RBI’s. Peterson was honored as the Region IX Player of the Year, All-Region IX team, as well as the All Tournament Region IX team.
Leading the team with a total of 10 steals was Brittney Murdoch. She was also named to the All-Region IX team and All-Tournament Region IX team.
Coach Pat Lytle said, “Our players are very dedicated, they practice in the fall, lift weights and condition in the off season and begin practicing for the spring season in mid-January.” SCC storm spring season began the first week of March and went until the second week of May.
Coach Lytle said, “Four players from the team commute from Lincoln. They are always expected to make it to practices and games and they do a great job making that sacrifice to play for us.”
Coach Lytle went on to say how proud he is of the player’s efforts in the classroom. They finished ranked in the top 20 in the nation for their team GPA during the first two years.
Coach Lytle said, “We set some team goals this year that we came close to accomplishing. Although we did not quite meet those goals, our players put forth great efforts and I am proud of their accomplishments.”
SCC Storm Softball will be losing six experience sophomores from the starting line-up Coach Lytle said, “They will be asking the incoming freshman and returning sophomores to step and fill those positions.”
