LINCOLN – The SCC Practical Nursing program at Southeast Community College has undergone a few developments recently.
This July, the program received certification through the National League of Nursing, which is good for eight years.
In addition, the school has recently received some new technology in order to further their educational standpoint.
The school now has Vita-Sim Annie, a low fidelity human/patient simulator. Nursing students are able to check her vital signs: lungs, blood pressure and pulse. The instructor is able to make changes to what the students are hearing.
According to Program Director Mary Trumble, that is not the only new and exciting technology the students are getting to use.
Bryan LGH and Southeast have partnered to feature on-site instruction for nursing students at the Lincoln hospital with a SIM Center.
“The Sims open and close their eyes, gag, cough, choke and can even talk,” says Trumble.
They are a little more advanced than Annie and provide students with a great learning tool before they start working with real people she added.
In addition, the Practical Nursing program is beginning to prepare for graduating its 100th class.
Trumble said she is starting to look into some sort of event for this landmark.
The Practical Nursing program offers concentrated basic study and laboratory practice in nursing fundamentals. The program teaches students the concepts, principles, skills and attitudes needed to become practical nurses.
