Southeast Community College graduates many students every quarter, but not before students fulfill their graduation requirements.
SCC Associate Registrar Lori Vancura spoke to the SCC Challenge about the process. “We make sure that the applications are turned in,” she began. “We review the transcripts – compare it to the catalogue for that year.”
Applications must be submitted with an advisor signature two to three weeks into the quarter of expected graduation. Vancura encourages students to be prompt, due to the complexity of the graduation process. “The deadlines…they’re there for a reason.”
To ensure that the student understands his or her academic requirements, there is a service provided by SCC online.
“On Webadvisor a student can go out to ‘program evaluation.’ The student can go check to see if they have the classes needed,” Vancura suggested. “It tells you what you’re missing in your program.”
In addition to the applications and academic requirements, Vancura noted that there is a processing fee of $25. People who do not pay this fee will be allowed to walk, but will not receive their diploma, certificate or degree until payment has been received and all accounts have been cleared by the business office.
Once these steps are completed, the SCC staff forms a graduate list, sorted by program and by last name. Data collected and presented include hometown and Grade Point Average.
Vancura noted that three hundred and thirty-one college degrees, diplomas and certificates were awarded during winter 2012 graduation, with an additional thirty-five General Equivalency Diploma. The Associate’s Degree Nursing program hailed the most graduates with forty-three graduates.
Vancura also stated that, though there are speakers as with most graduation ceremonies, “We focus on the graduation – the awarding of the diplomas.” She commented that “If you can’t come to the ceremony…notify registration as soon as possible.”
Graduation for Spring Quarter occurs on Friday, June 8, on all SCC campuses.
