The Student Ambassadors at Southeast Community College in Lincoln serve many purposes. There are student ambassadors in many of the different departments at SCC, and they do everything from filling out paperwork and answering phones to giving tours and organizing events.
Two ambassadors, Tahnisha Dowd of Lincoln and Castin Meyer, who are currently working in the Admissions Department as ambassadors. Dowd is a Business Accounting major at SCC and has been working as a student ambassador for one year. Meyer, a Surgical Tech major, and has been with the Admissions Department since July.
“It’s definitely hard at first,” Meyer said, talking about starting out as a student ambassador, “there’s so much information to learn.”
“We take these home with us and study them,” Dowd said, holding up the SCC student handbook. The major role that these two women serve is as tour guides for the new and prospective students of SCC.
They give tours all quarter long to people interested in every program at SCC.
“It’s nice,” Dowd said, “I take all of the tours in the business college, and Meyer does the medical program tours.”
Between the two of them, they split the rest of the tours and are prepared to answer any questions about specific programs or the SCC campus in general.
While giving tours is the focus of their jobs, Dowd and Meyer have many other duties as student ambassadors.
They serve as aids in the Admissions Department, and as they made clear, this covers a wide variety of jobs.
They also prepare parties and help with major events on campus. This includes everything down to directing traffic outside of SCC.
The two of them are even featured on a promo commercial for the college on the SCC website.
Their time working as student ambassadors has provided some funny stories. With as much information as they have to remember, it’s no surprise that Dowd or Meyer might stumble over words from time to time.
“It was one of my first tours,” Meyer recalled, “so Tahnisha was following me on my tour. I was listing some of the classes available through Continuing Education, and when I said ‘Latin Dancing’ the guys in the group thought I said lap dancing.”
It seems that even when she messes up, Meyer is getting people interested in SCC.
For many students in the last year, Dowd and Meyer have been the first exposure to SCC. They said that they love introducing people to SCC and getting them excited about college.
Besides doing introductory tours, Dowd and Meyer also provide follow-up tours to show students where their classes are located and are always willing to answer any other questions students may have through email.
In their time as student ambassadors, Dowd and Meyer have gotten to know students and staff throughout the college, and they’ve learned more about SCC than most students will ever know.
They both said the job is worth it when they walk down the halls and someone from a tour waves at them through the crowd. They also said it’s an added bonus that they get donuts on staff appreciation day.
The student ambassador program is a job offered through the work-study program at SCC. Information about the student ambassadors and other work-study programs can be found on the SCC website or at the Job Placement office at SCC.
