Eleven Southeast Community College student-athletes have earned Academic All-America awards from the National Junior College Athletic Association during the 2012-2013 seasons.
Tiffany Herbek of Deshler, a sophomore on the women’s basketball team, earned the highest academic award, the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, for her 4.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Freshman Michaela Parks of Pawnee City was the only Storm athlete to earn Academic All-America honors in two sports. She earned Exemplary Award for Academic Excellence for her 3.69 GPA as a member of the SCC softball and volleyball teams.
Earning the Superior Award for Academic Excellence were Stephanie Brownell, Manhattan, Kan. (Clifton-Clyde High School), sophomore, women’s softball, 3.94; Kylie Betten, Deshler, sophomore, women’s volleyball, 3.94; Hannah Tatum, North Las Vegas, Nev., (Cheyenne), women’s basketball, 3.9; and Shelby Schardt, Deshler, sophomore, women’s basketball, 3.87.
Other Exemplary Award winners: Paige Smith, Overton, freshman, women’s volleyball, 3.78; Roni Putnam, Gothenburg, sophomore, women’s softball, 3.76; John Babic Jr., Omaha (Bellevue West), sophomore, baseball, 3.75; Mitch Scheuler, Lincoln (Pius X), sophomore, baseball, 3.72; and Elizabeth Snider, Maywood, freshman, volleyball, 3.65.
Three Storm teams earned cumulative GPAs above 3.0. They are men’s golf (3.24, 13th nationally), volleyball (3.18) and softball (3.03).
“I congratulate these student athletes and Storm athletic teams for their academic excellence,” said Dan Johnson, Storm athletic director. “It can be challenging to juggle time in a sport and time studying. We’re extremely proud of all of these students.”
