Central Raiders dampen Lady Storm recognition day
February 22, 2016
The visiting Central Community College Lady Raiders put a damper on SCC player recognition day while blowing out the Lady Storm 91-59.
The loss was exceptionally befuddling in the fact that CCC was without their two leading scorers, Teisha Snyder (27) and Kenosha Plater (18), from the first time the two teams played in a 90-80 Central win.
The Lady Raiders came out firing on all cylinders and never let up. SCC could not overcome a poor team performance shooting from the field. Central was hot beyond the arc, hitting 10-20 3-point shots.
SCC had no answer for Makyala Augustine. The sophomore had 23 points, 11 boards, three blocked shots and 4-6 three point shooting. The performance surprised even the visiting Central fans, who were overheard voicing their astonishment. Augustine was averaging 6.8 points a game.
Southeast was led by Sophomore Grace Green, who had 14 points. Jayala Brown had 12 points, including a perfect 8-8 free throw shooting.
Central also out-rebounded the Lady Storm 48-35.
A nice crowd showed up to honor the Lady Storm players who were recognized before the game. The crowd included several friends and family members of local products Erin Saathoff (Diller-Odell) and Sierra Friedly (Pawnee City).
Co-Head Coach Vicki Wooton coached her last regular season game for the Lady Storm. Wooton is transitioning to coach the new SCC Cross Country team next year. The coach gave a brief, emotional address to the crowd before the game, thanking the players and also assistant coach Kaye Schlake for stepping in to help coach the team in the National tournament last year.
There was also a moment silence to remember long-time Diller/Odell coach Larry Schoff, who passed away last week.
The Lady Storm are the 2nd seed in the Region IX tournament, and will have another chance against Central if they can get past 3rd seeded North Platte this Wednesday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is set for 6 pm. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
