MILFORD – Serious cutting injuries are one of the biggest problems in the in the Building Construction industry, but new safety methods have reduced the amount of injuries in the past few years.
Building Construction Program Chair Ron Petsch said, “Safety training and improved lab space has helped to limit this hazard, but the program continues to look for ways to assure that situation will never happen.”
The Building Construction Program has just gotten their second table saw with “Instant stop” technology. The plan is to replace all of the table saws with SawStop table saws.
This would bring a new level of safety to the Milford campus. The SawStop table saw will not even cut through a hotdog, but yet will cut through a piece of wood.
This technology works with an electric current going through the blade on the table saw.
The blade stop is activated when the current running through the blade is changed.
The brake that stops the blade is almost instantaneous, it retracts the blade into the table saw and its aluminum brake can only be used one time.
The brake is faster than an air bag, takes about five minutes to change and costs $69.
