Dr. David Kohl, renowned agricultural economist and consultant, will be the featured speaker during the annual Ag Management Expo of Southeast Nebraska, scheduled for Jan. 17 in Beatrice.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Truman Center on Southeast Community College’s Beatrice Campus, 4771 W. Scott Road. The event is free, and a free lunch will be provided to the first 200 attendees. Lunch tickets can be obtained at the door.
The Expo is being sponsored by SCC and the Beatrice Area Chamber/Gage County Tourism, with assistance from Monsanto.
Kohl is professor emeritus in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech University. He now serves as president of AgriVisions, LLC, a knowledge-based consulting business providing cutting-edge programs to leading agricultural organizations worldwide. He also is business coach and part owner of Homestead Creamery, a value-added dairy business in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
“He is an outstanding speaker who has a following among folks who are linked to agriculture,” said Dennis Toalson, co-chair of SCC’s Agriculture Business & Management Technology program. “This is the second time he’s appeared at the Expo. He will have many good things to say.”
Kohl will kick off the day with a presentation titled “Mega Trends of U.S. World Agriculture.” That will take place from 9-10:15 a.m.
Nebraska State Climatologist, Al Dutcher, will provide a “2013 Weather Outlook” from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit booths from 11:15 a.m. until noon, followed by a wrap-up presentation by Kohl titled “Enthusiastic About the Future of Ag Top 10.” That presentation will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Dutcher specializes in climate data analysis, soil moisture analysis, weather forecasting, crop/weather relationships, and drought monitoring. A member of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Dutcher has been with UNL since 1989. He holds a bachelor’s degree in meteorology and a master’s degree in climatology, both from Iowa State University.
Dutcher is a past president and current member of the American Association of State Climatologists. He serves on the Governor’s Climate Assessment Response Committee and chairs the state’s Water Availability Outlook Committee. He also is a contributing editor/writer for Cropwatch.
Kohl has conducted more than 6,000 workshops and seminars for agricultural groups such as bankers, Farm Credit, FSA, and regulators, as well as producer and agribusiness groups. He has published four books and more than 1,200 articles on financial and business-related topics in journals, extension and other popular publications. Kohl regularly writes for “Corn and Soybean Digest” and other ag-lending publications.
