Many options are available to Southeast Community College (SCC) students who feel they need help in certain subjects that they struggle in.
Free tutoring is offered at all SCC locations to students who are enrolled in credit classes.
Help is available in math, writing, accounting, anatomy, physiology, drafting, food service, chemistry, biology and many other subjects that SCC offers.
The Multi-Academic Center (MAC) located on Lincoln campus offers free tutoring in math and writing. No appointment is necessary; students just need to visit the MAC in the Library Resource Center any time Monday through Thursday from 9 – 7 or Friday from 9 – 3.
If Lincoln students need help in subjects other than math or writing, they can call 402-437-2627 to schedule an appointment with a tutor in the subject that they need help in.
Chris Roffers, the MAC director, indicated that there are a number of tutors available on the Lincoln campus, 9 in math, 13 in writing and at least 1 each in all other general areas. She also indicated that limited tutoring is available at Energy Square.
Roffers explained that some of the tutors are adjunct teachers, UNL or Grad students, but most of them “are typically SCC students who are currently studying the subjects they are tutoring, and must be recommended by their instructors. “
Roffers encourages students to “come in early and as often as they need help.”
She said that “they will be glad that they did – because it really helps.”
SCC also offers tutoring on the Beatrice and Milford campuses.
In Beatrice, students should visit the Student Retention/Multicultural office in Jackson Hall, room J413 or call 402-228-8278 for more information about tutoring services.
In Milford, students should visit the Assessment Office located in the Placement/Assessment Building or call 402-761-8202 to schedule a tutoring appointment.
Smarthinking.com is another option available to students who need help with writing.
It is an online tutoring program provided free of charge to all SCC students. All a student needs to do is log onto the smarthinking.com web site, fill out an on-line submission form and upload their essay.
A qualified on-line tutor will review the essay and within 48 hours, they will provide feedback about the essay. They will not make corrections, instead they will identify problems in the writing and explain how and why to fix them.
