A strong second half of basketball was not enough for the Southeast Community College Lady Storm as they fell to the Hastings Junior Varsity 73-66 Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Truman Center.
Head Coach Vicki Wooton was pleased with the second half as SCC outscored Hastings JV 34-30. The Lady Storm’s defense held the Lady Broncos to just 24 percent shooting from the field in the second half.
“We need to put two halves together,” Wooton said. “We played much better in the second half. We would cut the lead to five and then it was back to ten. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”
The Lady Storm struggled from the field, hitting just 12 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lady Broncos shot just 33 percent, but hit 75 percent on 24-32 shooting from the free throw line.
Mesha Phillips was active on both offense and defense. Phillips scored 15 points and hounded the Lady Bronco ball handlers into three steals and two blocked shots.
SCC had two other players in double figures as Destiny Whitehead scored 15 points, and Amanda Fluker added 12. Makayla Gardner just missed a double/double, scoring eight points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Haley Gebers led Hastings with 21 points, including 11-14 from the free throw line.
SCC will play a home game against the Doane Junior Varsity at SCC-Lincoln Thursday Jan. 17.
