The Southeast Community College men’s basketball team beat the Doane Junior Varsity 75-69 Sunday, Jan. 6, in its first game since winter break.
SCC trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, before taking a 37-36 halftime lead.
The Storm fell behind again in the second half, then charged ahead midway through the half and lead by as many as 15 points before holding on for a 75-69 win.
Despite getting the win, Head Coach Joel Wooton was perplexed after the game.
Wooton said that the team was “ready to play” after the lengthy winter break, but seemed to show it more in practice than during the game.
“We have been playing great on offense in practice, and the kids show great energy,” Wooton explained. “But for some reason, we are not translating that over to the games, and usually, we have the opposite problem with our teams. We are a young team, so maybe that’s it.”
SCC struggled with free throws, hitting just 44 percent for the game. The team worked on free throws in practice, leading Wooton to believe “maybe they shot too many.”
Delquan Thomas led the Storm with 22 points.
Leldon Love added 11 points and a slam dunk in his debut for the Storm after transferring from St. Louis Community College.
SCC travels to Northeast Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
