The Southeast Community College men’s basketball team overcame the flu bug and an assortment of injuries to overwhelm the York Junior Varisty Team 89-60 Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Truman Center.
Head Coach Joel Wooton said several players were “throwing up” and were nursing various minor injuries prior to the game with York JV. Wooton was pleased overall with the game.
“We finally put a complete game together,” Wooton said. “We didn’t want a repeat of Monday’s game at Concordia where we let down in the second half. We really got on the kids to continue to play hard, and they did.”
The coach also noted the continued development of St. Louis Community College transfer Leldon Love.
“He played his best game tonight,” Wooton said. “He had a four year layoff from basketball, and it has taken some time, but he is really going to help us down the stretch.”
Love notched a double/double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Delquan Thomas poured in 24 points, hitting 11-13 from the field. Tyrell Corlew added 15 points.
The York JV squad got an epic performance from Dewayne Johnson. Johnson scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch a triple/double.
“He was hitting everything,” Wooton explained. “He made us pay as we tried to work on some zone early on, but he was also hitting shots when we got a hand in his face.”
Wooton said that Johnson wasn’t the focus of his defense in practice.
“We were focused on shutting down Johnny Cooksey,” Wooton said. “He gave us fits the first time we played … I thought we did a pretty good job on him until later in the game when he started hitting some shots.”
Cooksey finished with 15 points.
SCC will host McCook Community College Sunday, Jan 20, at 6 p.m. as part of a men’s and women’s double header.
