For the SCC Storm, last weekend’s long trip to Boone, Iowa, was justified with victories over two nationally-ranked teams.
At the Des Moines Area Community College Classic, the Storm defeated 19th-ranked Iowa Central 79-78 and 9th-ranked Des Moines Area Community College 74-72 to improve to 8-1 on the season.
“SCC knocked off two rated teams on the road,” said Head Coach Joel Wooton and, “defense helped SCC win both games.”
The Storm defeated 19th-ranked Iowa Central 79-78 on Friday, Nov. 18.
“SCC came back from 13 points down in the second half to win,” said Wooton.
Delquan Thomas, a freshman from Louisville, Ky., led in scoring with 20 points.
Following Thomas were Venton Wilder a sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with 18; Tarir Gatuoch a sophomore from Omaha with 10; Torr Woodhouse a sophomore from Cambridge, New Zealand with 8; and Mike Evans, a sophomore from Bossier City, La., scored 9 off the bench.
The Storm then overcame 9th-ranked Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday, Nov. 19.
“SCC jumped out to a 15 point lead in the second half,” said Wooton.
Domonique Smith a sophomore from Louisville, Ky., led the storm with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Following Smith were Wilder with 19 points; and Thomas with 17 points.
Thomas also matched Smith in rebounds and put in the game winning put-back and free throw to seal the win at DMACC.
“SCC,” said Wooton, “torched DMACC on the boards 53-29.”
The Storm will be traveling to Lincoln to face Union College Tuesday, Nov. 29, for its next game.
