Clarkson College and Southeast Community College recently formed an agreement to allow students enrolled in SCC’s Radiologic Technology program to concurrently pursue an online bachelor’s degree in Medical Imaging at Clarkson College.
“The agreement between SCC and Clarkson College is an incredible opportunity for our students to obtain a bachelor’s degree,” said Kelly Findley, program coordinator and co-chair of SCC’s Radiologic Technology program. “We see this as an investment in student education and as a means to support the future growth of employees in the workforce.”
The RT students are eligible to enroll in the Medical Imaging program at Clarkson College after successfully completing one year of the associate degree program at SCC.
Clarkson College will grant the students credit for the relevant coursework they completed in the RT program. This transfer process allows SCC students to earn their Medical Imaging degree after completing just 12 classes at Clarkson College.
“Because SCC does not offer a Medical Imaging program, we wanted to give their students the same opportunity that Clarkson College students have to earn both degrees and in a reasonable timeframe,” said Ellen Collins, Clarkson College Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging director. “The students should experience a smooth transition into the Medical Imaging program, as it (like the RT program at SCC) also is offered entirely online.”
The primary benefit of earning the bachelor’s degree is the opportunity to specialize in post-primary areas such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, imaging informatics, angiography, and bone densitometry. Additionally, Collins said the dual degree will significantly increase the marketability and career options available to SCC students upon entering the workforce.
“Forming this agreement is one way SCC and Clarkson College are working to meet the need for more highly qualified and prepared professionals in the RT and Medical Imaging fields,” Collins said.
If simultaneously pursuing both degrees is not feasible, SCC students may wait to enroll in the bachelor’s degree program until they have fully completed the RT program at SCC and earned their ARRT certification.
