BEATRICE – SCC Men’s Basketball came out of the weekend with a 2-1 record at the Colby Tournament in Colby, Kan.
The Storm’s first game was Thursday, Nov. 10, against Colorado Northwestern.
SCC’s defense held Northwestern to 17 first half points. The Storm led at the end of the half 30-17.
Head Coach Joel Wooton said, “SCC’s defense controlled the game.”
Freshman Delquan Thomas of Louisville, Ky., led the Storm in points with 15.
Leading the Storm in rebounds was Torr Woodhouse of Cambridge, New Zealand, with 9 rebounds.
SCC finished the game with a score of 72-51 and raised their record to 4-0
The Storm’s next game was Friday, Nov. 11, against Colby Community College.
“The SCC defense was good enough to win,” said Wooton. However SCC fell short and suffered their first loss to Colby with a score of 58-66.
SCC held Colby to 29 percent shooting, but Colby was 23 out of 34 from the free throw line. SCC was just 7 out of 15 from the line.
Sophomore Venton Wilder of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the storm with a double-double. Wilder scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for the night.
“SCC battled through foul trouble throughout the game and struggled to score against Colby’s match-up zone.” Wooton added.
The Storm came back from their loss on Friday to win their final game of the tournament.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, SCC faced Kansas State-Salina, defeating them 76-64.
Woodhouse scored the first 8 points for the Storm, causing K-State to switch to a zone defense to guard the 6’8” sophomore.
“SCC struggled in the first half with foul trouble again,” Wooton said, “which led to a struggle offensively late in the first half.”
Southeast left the first half leading with a lead of only 31-30.
SCC started strong in the second half to gain a 25-point lead over K-State.
“K-State ended the game on a 9-0 run to close within 12 points,” said Wooton, but “SCC defense really clamped down, holding K-State to 37 percent shooting.”
Four of the Storm’s starters finished the game in double figures.
Woodhouse and sophomore Dominique Smith of Louisville, Ky., led the Storm with 18 points each, and Wilder and Thomas each contributed 14 points..
Wooton added, “SCC may be playing the toughest week of the season this next week.”
The Storm will face Cloud County at home on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
Following the Cloud County game, SCC will be travelling to Boone, Ia., to face two nationally ranked Division II teams at the DMACC Tournament Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19.
