Southeast Community College’s golf team remained consistent in Round 2 of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament, but it fell 13 strokes behind the first-place team heading into Thursday’s third round.
SCC’s James Willis, a sophomore from Sedgley, England, fired a 1-under-par 71 Wednesday to pace the Storm at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. That brought him into a tie for ninth place individually with teammate Caleb Harms, a sophomore from Beatrice. Harms shot a 75 on Wednesday.
Calvin Freeman, a freshman from Table Rock, improved two strokes from his first-round 75 and was tied for 14th heading into Thursday. Mike Downey, a freshman from Gloucester, United Kingdom, shot 78 Wednesday and was tied for 36th place. Alex Overfelt, a sophomore from Papillion, struggled to an 80 on Wednesday and fell into a tie for 45th place.
South Mountain Community College of Arizona broke away from the pack with an impressive 4-under-par 284 team score on Wednesday, putting the Cougars 11 strokes in front of second-place John A. Logan of Illinois. SCC was at 591, 15 over par, entering the third round.
The four-day tournament concludes Friday.
